Crossing Cultures: Travel and the Frontiers of North-American Identity
Conference at the University of Groningen, 19-20-21 May 2003
At the International Conference Crossing Cultures, organized by the Institute for North-American Studies of the University of Groningen, scholars from seven different countries discussed a variety of topics related to the trope of travel and shifting cultural spaces in North America. In his opening speech the Ambassador of Mexico stressed the fact that the I.N.A.S. had, for the first time in Europe, gathered scholars from the whole of North America, i.e. Canada, USA and Mexico.
By exploring migration and identity, transitional places and frontiers in contemporary music, literature and culture of Canada, America and Mexico, the participants exchanged their views in lively interdisciplinary sessions.
The following Canadian researchers presented a paper: Christian Riegel (University of Regina), Winfried Siemerling (Université de Sherbrooke), Marlene Goldman (University of Toronto), Lucie Guillemette (Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières), Jean Morency (Université de Moncton), Jean-François Côté (Université du Québec à Montréal), Simon Harel (Université du Québec à Montréal), Patrick Imbert (Université d'Ottawa).
